9-11 was a tragedy that everyone will remember. I remember that day very vividly. I was sitting in my 6Th grade class and we were about to watch a movie. My teacher turned on the Television, which was set to channel 3 and all I heard was “A plane has crashed into the twin towers.” Shortly after, my principal came on the P.A. and announced the tragedy that we saw on the news. At the time I had no idea what the twin towers were but judging from the emotions of the teachers and older students I could tell that this was important. This was an attack on us. Many people even said that something in Canada could be bombed next. It changed the world in a matter of hours. Security at airports is strict and if you’re East Indian or Arab it’s almost impossible for you to cross a border. This stereotype that all East Indian and Arab people are terrorists is terrible because it is obviously an untrue statement. This day made a huge impact on the world and it will never be forgotten.
Many artists and bands have written songs about this event. Some of these songs are making a statement to the U.S. government, some are to help grieving families and some are parodies that even further exploit the terrorist stereotype. Alan Jackson an artist who writes about how the attack makes people feel. I don’t really care for Alan Jackson and his song, “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)”. He does a good job of giving people a remembrance of heroes and telling them that “God” is who you should look to at a time like this. However, many people don’t believe in “God” and therefore cannot relate to the Christian aspects of the song. The song also contains a line that states, “I watch CNN but I’m not sure I can tell you the difference in Iraq and Iran.” This implies that CNN and other news stations are not doing their job. I think that it is a news stations job of telling us what is going on in the world and if Alan Jackson doesn’t find his answer on the news, he should research the topic himself. The news has a lot of broadcast time but they must use it to tell us many new stories and sometimes can’t give us all the details. One reporter even says, “My gut reaction is, well, heck, Allan, turn off the TV and read a history book on the tour bus once in a while, because distinctions like that have now become pretty dang essential.” What do you think about this statement? Is Jackson right about CNN not doing there job or does he need to do some more research himself instead of depending on the news?
There were also many movies and documentaries made about the September 11th attack. One of the documentaries called, “Seven Days in September” was mostly filmed by random people who happened to have a camera in New York when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. This film gave me even more perspective of what happened that day in the life of an ordinary person living and ordinary day. Many people even said that the incident was too unreal to be happening. A man in the movie even says, “This is like a sick f’n movie.” Nobody saw this coming but we’ve all seen movies that show giant explosions such as “Independence Day” and many other action movies. Even though we’re used to seeing these things, all of this explosion imagery didn’t come close to preparing us for what happened on September 11, 2001.
Two Hollywood movies that were inspired by 9-11 are “United 93” and “World Trade Centre.” These movies were produced by Universal and Paramount which are two very recognizable film companies but the films show two totally different perspectives. “United 93” which is about the plane that did not hit its intended target is a more authentic look at what happened on the plane. This does give us more details on what happened that day but it was still made for profit. Movie producers know what people will pay to watch and people definitely bought into these movies. “World Trade Centre” which I believe lived up to “United 93” is a more dramatic look at two firemen who get trapped under the rubble of the Twin Towers while on a rescue mission. Kyle Florence, a movie analyst says, “I felt this story to be very natural and not Hollywood-ized, something I had been worried would happen.” Even though some people think the movies are very dramatic, others think they seemed very genuine. Personally, I think “World Trade Center” and “United 93” were excellent movies which received good ratings.
In Conclusion, this attack has caused tragedy among many people. There is a war and no intention of peace. There is music that tells us not to trust the government and music that tells to pray for the lost heroes and victims of the attack. There are movies which are both factual and dramatic which can sometimes confuse society. Many people don’t even know what to think about the attack and others only think based on what they have seen on TV or in movies. This attack has only made our nation a harder place to live. Sure, people can make some money off of it never happened many people would still be on this Earth. This was a serious tragedy which was fallowed by a serious war with no intention of ending any time soon.
